TikTok fined €600 million for violating EU personal data law

TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, was fined 530 million euros or around Rp9.8 trillion by the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) for violating the European Union's personal data protection regulations ( General Data Protection Regulation / GDPR).

As reported by Engadget on Saturday, this is the third largest fine ever imposed in the history of GDPR law enforcement. The total fine includes 45 million euros (Rp838 billion) for transparency violations and 485 million euros (Rp8.3 trillion) for illegal data transfers to China.

In the ruling announced, the DPC said TikTok transferred European user data to China without any guarantee that the data was safe from Chinese government surveillance. In addition to the fine, TikTok was also given six months to stop all illegal data transfers.
