U.S. Federal Court Judge William Sessions in Vermont ordered Ozturk released on bail after a hearing that lasted approximately three hours.
During the hearing, Judge Sessions explained that the US government's lawyers "provided no evidence" to justify Ozturk's detention, other than a post she wrote on the university's website.
During the session, the judge heard four witnesses who spoke on behalf of the Turkish student and called for the release of Ozturk, who suffers from asthma.
The judge stated that the Turkish student had a strong academic record, which required her to participate in out-of-state programs and take classes outside of the state, and therefore there was no justification for restricting her travel or placing electronic tracking devices on her.
On March 25, US authorities arrested Ozturk in Massachusetts for her support of Palestine. She was then transferred to Louisiana, where testimony was heard in the first hearing of the case.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio then stated that his country had revoked Ozturk's visa and intended to deport her from the United States.
Rubio stated that his country had revoked the visas of more than 300 foreign students whom he described as "supporters of Hamas."
