Research published in the journal Heart found how the frequency, duration and speed of walking reduce the risk of developing heart rhythm disorders called arrhythmias, which can lead to strokes and other serious heart events.
As reported by Health on Friday (2/5), walking at what researchers consider an "average" pace of three to four miles per hour (4 kilometers per hour) lowered the risk of arrhythmia by more than a third, the researchers reported. Those who walked at a brisk pace of more than four miles per hour had an even lower risk.
"Our take-home message is that people should try and find a little bit of time in the day to walk for a purpose," says study senior author Jill Pell, PhD, a professor of public health at the University of Glasgow.
