Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said that the Indonesian government has submitted a second best offer in the reciprocal tariff negotiations imposed by United States (US) President Donald Trump.
Ahead of the deadline for negotiations on July 8, Airlangga said that the demands submitted by the US government, both in the form of tariffs and trade barriers, had been agreed to by the Indonesian government.
"In our tariff negotiations, we have conveyed Indonesia's second best offer . And we have already granted some of America's requests, both regarding tariffs and non- tariff barriers. and commercial," said Airlangga when met at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Friday.
Airlangga explained that his party had communicated directly with the United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent who in principle appreciated a number of offers made by Indonesia.
But of course, the final decision on tariff negotiations between Indonesia and the US does not depend on one party.
The US government must of course coordinate with the United States Trade Representative (USTR), the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Finance.
The final result of the negotiations, which have gone through repeated exchanges of documents between Indonesia and the US, is dynamic because it takes into account other countries that are also negotiating tariffs.
"Every day there are changes because other countries propose something. Later, what other countries propose, they (will) ask 'Why didn't Indonesia propose it?' or what Indonesia proposed, other countries didn't propose it, they swapped it around," said Airlangga.
As reported, the deadline for tariff negotiations falls on July 8, 2025, or 90 days after US President Donald Trump announced the imposition of reciprocal tariffs on its main trading partner countries in early April 2025.
