Amazon has entered into a partnership to purchase 1.92 gigawatts of electricity from Talen Energy's Susquehanna nuclear power plant (PLTN) in Pennsylvania, United States, as a power supply for AWS cloud services and artificial intelligence (AI) servers.
As reported by Tech Crunch on Monday, this collaboration is a modification of a previous agreement between Amazon and Talen. Previously, Amazon planned to build a data center near the Susquehanna Nuclear Power Plant and draw electricity directly from the facility without going through the grid .
However, this plan was scrapped by regulators over concerns that it would unfairly burden other customers with grid operational costs.
Under the updated agreement, Amazon’s AWS data centers will be charged like regular customers connected to the electricity grid. Talen said the grid connection will be adjusted in the spring of 2026, and the electricity supply contract will run through 2042.
