The Libyan Transit Foundation for Migrant Assistance reported the death of an Egyptian migrant and the rescue of 36 others who were on board a boat that caught fire at sea.
The Libyan Civil Society Foundation explained, in a post on its Facebook page, that the Tobruk branch of the General Directorate of Coast Guard rescued a boat carrying migrants that had caught fire off the coast of Tobruk, Libya. The boat was carrying 37 Egyptian migrants.
She noted that one of the migrants on board the boat, from the Sahel Selim district in Assiut Governorate, had died, while three others had sustained burn injuries. She noted that the deceased's body had been transferred to the morgue at the Tobruk Medical Center.
Last April, Libyan authorities rescued 62 Egyptians on a sinking boat off the coast of Kampot, east of Tobruk. The Egyptians were attempting to illegally immigrate to Europe. They were transported to the Tobruk naval base, pending deportation to Egypt.
In May, Libya's Anti-Illegal Immigration Agency announced the deportation of 130 irregular migrants of Egyptian nationality to their country. Of these, 87 were arrested while attempting to cross by sea to Europe, six others were referred to the Public Prosecution, and the rest were arrested during periodic security campaigns.
