Libya: Dbeibah orders investigation into Sabratha clashes

Libya's Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, has ordered the commander of the Western Coast Military Region to launch an immediate investigation into the armed clashes that took place in the city of Sabratha over the past few hours.

The media office of the Government of National Unity's presidency explained in a statement that this assignment comes within the framework of monitoring security developments in the city, and is based on previous instructions issued yesterday, Thursday, which mandated military leaders in the region to urgently intervene on the ground to contain the situation and resolve the conflict, with the aim of ensuring the stability of the security situation and protecting civilians.

The statement affirmed that Dbeibah is closely monitoring these events, stressing that no party or group will be allowed to threaten security or destabilize any Libyan city, noting that the law will be applied without exception.

The statement indicated that the Government of National Unity continues to take the necessary measures to secure Libyan cities and maintain the safety of citizens, stressing the importance of full cooperation from the security and military services to ensure a rapid return to calm in Sabratha.

On the morning of the first day of Eid al-Adha,  clashes involving medium and heavy weapons erupted between armed groups in the Dabbasha area of Sabratha, western Libya, resulting in casualties, injuries, and panic among civilians.

Local sources confirmed to RT that the clashes erupted after hours of relative calm following the clashes on Thursday.

Sabratha witnessed violent clashes between armed groups on Thursday, resulting in deaths and injuries in one of the most violent confrontations the city has seen in months.

The clashes resulted in deaths and injuries among civilians, some of whom were transferred to the Libyan-German Hospital for treatment, while others went missing amid the chaos.

Recent events have once again highlighted the reality of Libya's arms chaos, with more than 29 million weapons circulating outside the state's control and the continued dominance of armed groups vying for control of Libyan cities, particularly in the western region.

In contrast, the capital, Tripoli, and several other cities witnessed angry popular protests against the dominance of armed groups, demanding their dismantling, the restoration of state sovereignty, and the establishment of unified security institutions.
