Canada beats El Salvador 2-0 to secure Gold Cup Group B title





 Canada secured their place in the quarter-finals and emerged as Group B champions of the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup after beating El Salvador 2-0 in a match at Shell Energy Stadium on Wednesday.

Canada's winning goals were scored by captain Jonathan David in the 53rd minute and Tajon Buchanan in the 56th minute, while El Salvador had to play with nine men after their midfielders, Santos Ortiz and Jairo Henriquez, were shown red cards.Ortiz received a second yellow card in the 35th minute after a hard foul on Niko Sigur. Henriquez was then sent off in first-half stoppage time after catching Alistair Johnston in the face, with a straight red card following a VAR review.Earlier, El Salvador goalkeeper Mario Gonzalez had saved Jonathan David's penalty after Jacob Shaffelburg was brought down in the box by Jefferson Valladares.Statistics showed Canada's dominance with 80.3 percent possession, far ahead in the number of shots (14-2) and corner kicks (13-1).Of the total 30 fouls that occurred throughout the match, 19 were committed by El Salvador players.
