The official told the Hebrew newspaper Maariv that Iran recently launched missiles carrying double the amount of explosives.
The newspaper quoted the official as saying that the army had opened an investigation into the type of missile fired by Iran toward the city of Bat Yam, which caused significant damage to a multi-story building, and whether it carried a modified warhead containing large quantities of explosives.
Israeli estimates, according to the newspaper, indicate that Iran launched the Khorramshahr missile at Israel, carrying more than a ton of explosives.
The official said the army is investigating the number of Iranian missiles and the type of warheads they carried. He noted that an Iranian missile launched Wednesday evening was intercepted by the Arrow system, but its size and the amount of explosives it carried necessitated the launch of a second missile from the Iron Dome system to ensure it was fully detonated.
Since dawn on June 13, Israel, with US support, has launched an aggression against Iran, including bombing nuclear facilities and missile bases, and assassinating military leaders and nuclear scientists. This has resulted in 224 deaths and 1,277 injuries. Tehran has responded with ballistic missiles and drones, leaving approximately 24 dead and hundreds injured.
The risk of an escalation of the conflict looms, with Western and Israeli reports suggesting the United States could join Israel in its aggression against Iran. This coincides with statements by US President Donald Trump calling on Tehran to surrender unconditionally and threatening to target Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
