Diplomatic source: European ministers to hold nuclear talks with Iran in Geneva on Friday.

The source added that the ministers will first meet with EU foreign policy chief Kaya Kallas at the German consulate in Geneva before holding a joint meeting with the Iranian foreign minister.

The European initiative comes amid fears of an escalation in the Middle East conflict after Israel launched large-scale military strikes on Iran last week, prompting Tehran to respond with waves of missiles targeting Israeli targets.

The talks, which the source said are being coordinated with the United States, aim to persuade Iran to provide firm guarantees that its nuclear program will be used for civilian purposes only.

The source indicated that the talks will be followed by an expert-level dialogue.

Since dawn on Friday, Israel, with US support, has launched an aggression against Iran, bombing nuclear facilities and missile bases and assassinating military leaders and nuclear scientists. This has left 224 dead and 1,277 wounded. Tehran has responded with ballistic missiles and drones, leaving approximately 24 dead and hundreds wounded.

Tel Aviv and Tehran consider each other their arch-enemies, and Israel's current aggression against Iran is the most extensive of its kind, representing a transition from a "shadow war" of bombings and assassinations to an open military conflict.
