DPR to immediately summon digital platforms regarding revision of Broadcasting Law

Member of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives Nurul Arifin said that his party will soon summon representatives of digital platforms to discuss the position of over-the-top (OTT) media or online content broadcast service providers in the revision of the Broadcasting Law.

"We still have a little homework to do. Therefore, we will invite large digital platforms, such as YouTube, Netflix, and TikTok as soon as possible so that we can find an agreement.

According to Nurul, the summons of the digital platform to the public hearing (RDPU) aims to clarify the scope regulated in the Broadcasting Law later: whether it only concerns conventional broadcast media or includes OTT media.

Given today's technological disruption, the Indonesian House of Representatives wants there to be a principle of fairness between conventional broadcasting institutions and OTT entities.

"So that taxes that are flowing abroad can also be paid here, so that they (OTT) also have an office here, and so that they can also follow the rules here. So there is no more discrimination. This is what we hope for," he said.
