Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden stressed the importance of starting the 2025 Club World Cup with a win, after the Citizens beat Wydad AC 2-0 in their opening Group G match.
Foden scored the fastest goal in tournament history in just one minute and 54 seconds at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, before providing the assist for Jeremy Doku's second goal late in the first half.
"Yes, it's very important to start with a win," Foden was quoted as saying on City's official website on Thursday.
"The pitch was quite dry at times, the weather was very hot. These are not the conditions we are used to, so we had to keep the ball longer and attack at the right time," he continued.
City came close to extending their lead through chances from Doku and substitute Erling Haaland, while Rico Lewis was shown a straight red card in stoppage time for a dangerous challenge.
