Opposition leader Yair Lapid commented on the ceasefire agreement with Iran in a post on the X platform: "And now Gaza, it's time to close its file too. Return the kidnapped soldiers, end the war."
For his part, Yair Golan, leader of the opposition Democratic Party and former deputy chief of staff of the IDF, asserted in a post on the X platform that the campaign against Iran ended with a clear security achievement that would not have been possible without Israel's strength and cohesion as a democratic state.
He added that the time has come to review the ceasefire agreement, stressing the need to ensure it prevents Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and to pursue potential sanctions, including renewed fighting, in the event of a breach of the agreement. Golan called for "fulfilling the mission by returning all hostages, ending the war in Gaza, and halting the division that threatens Israel's security."
Earlier on Tuesday, Israel announced its agreement to a ceasefire with Iran, warning of a "forceful" response to any violation of the agreement. This came in a statement issued by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, following US President Donald Trump's announcement early Tuesday that a ceasefire agreement had been reached between Israel and Iran, calling on both sides to respect it.
As of 07:50 GMT, no official comment had been issued by the Iranian authorities on Netanyahu's office's statement.
Before the ceasefire took effect, four Israelis were killed and 22 others injured when 11 Iranian missiles fell in five waves over the course of two hours in various parts of Israel, according to Hebrew media.
The region has been witnessing a sustained military escalation since June 13, with Israel, with US support, targeting nuclear facilities, missile bases, and nuclear leaders and scientists in Iran. Tehran has responded by bombing Israeli military and intelligence sites with ballistic missiles and drones, resulting in deaths and injuries on both sides.
Tel Aviv estimates that there are 54 Israeli prisoners in the Gaza Strip, 20 of whom are still alive. Meanwhile, more than 10,000 Palestinians are languishing in Israeli prisons, suffering harsh detention conditions including torture, starvation, and medical neglect, which have led to the deaths of several of them, according to Palestinian and Israeli human rights and media reports.
On the other hand, since October 7, 2023, Israel, with US support, has been committing what Palestinian and Israeli human rights and media reports describe as "genocide" in the Gaza Strip. This has left more than 187,000 Palestinians dead or wounded, the majority of whom are children and women, in addition to more than 11,000 missing and hundreds of thousands displaced.
