Meta has signed a long-term cooperation agreement with Constellation Energy that will allow it to purchase nuclear energy supplied by the Clinton Clean Energy Center in southern Illinois, United States, to support the operation of an artificial intelligence (AI) data center .
According to Engadget's broadcast on Tuesday (3/6), the 20-year agreement is part of Meta's efforts to utilize clean energy sources in operating its digital facilities.
The company said it prioritizes using 100 percent clean, renewable energy to operate its data centers, and recognizes "the enormous value of nuclear power in providing reliable, stable electricity."
Rather than building a new nuclear power plant, the company opted to tap into Clinton's electricity supply to ensure the plant's long-term operation.
The deal, which will begin in 2027, will allow Meta to buy about 1.1 gigawatts of nuclear power that the Clinton Clean Energy Center currently generates.
