Spain calls for an arms embargo on Israel and the resumption of nuclear negotiations with Iran

Spain called for an arms embargo on Israel for the duration of the war in Gaza, while stressing the need to resume talks on Iran's nuclear program.

"We, the European Union, are Israel's largest trading partner in the world," Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said in an interview with Bloomberg, stressing that "we Europeans must impose an arms embargo and not sell weapons to Israel as long as this war continues."

He added, "The European Union must act in a manner similar to what it did after the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022, in a serious attempt to advance peace efforts."

The minister also expressed regret over the lack of any signs of de-escalation between Israel and Iran and called for the resumption of dialogue with Iran regarding its nuclear program.

It is noteworthy that last May, the Spanish Parliament approved a proposal to ban arms trade with Israel.

In the same month, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called on the European Union to suspend the association agreement with Israel and impose a comprehensive arms embargo on the country.
