Bob Azam: Human resources must be the driving force behind Indonesia's green industry.

PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia Deputy President Director Bob Azam said the need for a green workforce is increasing, but this must be accompanied by improvements to the curriculum at the educational level.

Bob stated that Indonesia still lacks human resources (HR) with expertise in the green industry sector. He believes this could begin by introducing specific courses into formal education.

"There are new fields where there aren't enough personnel from formal education. For example, how we develop biofuels, and so on. It's true that some people might take specific courses, but those are considered specialized courses," Bob said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He said Indonesia must develop human resources who will become the driving force in the green industry.

With adequate human resources, Bob continued, employment opportunities will also be created.

"Usually, we look for human resources first before we look for industry. Going forward, I want to change that. We'll prepare human resources to become the leading sector , the ones who attract the entry of green industries so we can get optimal benefits," Bob explained.

On the other hand, Bob said Indonesia should learn from European countries that aspire to be leaders in the green industry. As a result, they experience overinvestment, leading to greenflation , or rising prices for environmentally friendly materials due to high demand for raw materials.

According to him, the most important thing is to realize the energy transition by 2030 by flattening carbon emissions.

"So we can't be too aggressive without considering financing and everything else. Therefore, we have to be wise ," Bob added.
