The party's parliamentary group leader, Stephen Flynn, said they intend to introduce the bill when Parliament returns from its summer recess in September, stressing: "The party will force a vote on the bill if necessary."
This threat comes days after more than 220 British MPs, including dozens from the ruling Labour Party, called on the government to follow France's lead and formally recognize a Palestinian state. This call came after French President Emmanuel Macron announced that his country would recognize the State of Palestine during the UN General Assembly meeting in September.
Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party and British Prime Minister, had previously pledged to recognize a Palestinian state, but stressed that this must occur within the framework of a comprehensive peace process.
In this context, Flynn said: "Keir Starmer must stop defending the indefensible and have the courage to demand that Israel end its war now."
The Scottish National Party, which advocates for Scottish independence, is one of the most prominent opposition parties in the British Parliament, currently holding nine of the 650 seats.
Starmer is under increasing pressure both domestically and internationally over his stance on the war in Gaza, amid growing calls for immediate recognition of a Palestinian state, particularly with the escalating humanitarian catastrophe and the threat of famine in the Strip.
The Prime Minister's Office announced on Saturday that it had held talks with its French and German counterparts regarding British plans to airdrop humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, as well as to evacuate sick and wounded children.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been waging a war of extermination in Gaza, including killing, starvation, destruction, and forced displacement, ignoring all international calls and orders from the International Court of Justice to halt it.
The genocide, with American support, left more than 204,000 Palestinians dead or wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 9,000 missing, in addition to hundreds of thousands of displaced persons and a famine that claimed the lives of many.
