Five Indonesian representatives advanced to the last 16 of the Japan Open

Five of Indonesia's nine representatives advanced to the last 16 of the Japan Open after winning their first-round matches at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

Men's singles player Alwi Farhan opened Indonesia's positive progress by defeating Taiwanese athlete Lee Chia Hao with 21-18, 21-11.

But fourth seed Jonatan Christie was eliminated after losing 13-21, 12-21 to Kenta Nishimoto, which continued Jonatan's unsatisfactory trend in recent tournaments.

Women's singles player Gregoria Mariska Tunjung also lost after losing 10-21, 12-21 to Japanese player Riko Gunji.

The men's doubles pair Leo Rolly Carnando/Bagas Maulana, who were the eighth seeds, also lost to the Taiwanese pair Liu Kuang Heng/Yang Po Han with 15-21, 19-21.
