Japan, through a national research team from the National Institute of Information and Communication Technology (NICT), has successfully set a new world record by delivering fast internet at 1.92 petabits per second, which is equivalent to 1,020,000 gigabits per second with a transmission distance of 1,808 kilometers.
This transmission distance, when compared to the distance between cities in Japan, is equivalent to the distance from Sapporo to Fukuoka, and when compared to the distance between cities in Indonesia, this distance is equivalent to almost twice the distance from Anyer to Panarukan.
In an official NICT press release, this fast internet achievement was announced to the public by NICT at the end of May 2025 and surpassed the previous record set by Japan in 2023.
This was achieved by NICT together with its research partners from Sumitomo Electric Industries by presenting an improved standard 19-core fiber optic cable.
