The government is striving to build the competitiveness of the domestic artificial intelligence (AI) industry so that it can become a major player in ASEAN, the association of Southeast Asian nations that includes Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia.
"Indonesia, with its large population, has the potential to become a major player in the artificial intelligence industry . The ASEAN region has considerable potential to become a global AI powerhouse," said Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria in a press statement in Jakarta on Friday.
He stated that ASEAN's digital economy potential is estimated to reach US$120 billion by 2027, with Indonesia projected to contribute up to 40 percent.
Therefore, the government is striving to build the strength of the domestic AI industry, starting by establishing strategic nodes in industrial areas such as Batam City in the Riau Islands Province.
