US President Donald Trump said he hopes talks aimed at a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas will yield tangible results this week, while Israeli media reported talks within the government coalition to discuss resuming the war in the Gaza Strip after the agreement.
The United States supports a 60-day ceasefire proposal that includes the phased release of prisoners in Gaza, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from specific areas of the Strip, and the resumption of negotiations aimed at ending the aggression once and for all.
Trump told reporters on Sunday that talks were ongoing and that he hoped a settlement would be reached in the coming days.
For his part, US envoy to the region, Steve Witkoff , expressed optimism about the ceasefire negotiations in Gaza. Witkoff said he will meet with senior Qatari officials in New Jersey in the coming hours.
Hamas and Jihad
For its part, Hamas announced that a delegation from the movement discussed developments in the Doha negotiations regarding a ceasefire in Gaza with a delegation of Islamic Jihad leaders.
Hamas said the two delegations discussed the occupation's responses to the proposals presented by the mediators and ways to deal with them.
Hamas and Islamic Jihad emphasized that any indirect negotiations with Israel must lead to an end to the war, a full Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, the opening of the crossings, and reconstruction.
Meanwhile, Israel's Channel 13 quoted an Israeli official as saying that the ongoing negotiations in Doha are not on the verge of collapse, and that the Israeli delegation will remain in Qatar.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had accepted Witkoff's proposal and the mediators' proposal for a prisoner exchange deal, but that Hamas had rejected them.
Netanyahu added that Hamas wants to remain in Gaza and for Israeli forces to withdraw so they can rearm and resume attacks on Israel. He said he is determined to return the kidnapped soldiers, but he also insists on achieving the goal of eliminating Hamas.
