A caravan with about 700 migrants leaves Tapachula for the US.

San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chis., August 29, 2021.- Around 700 migrants, mostly Haitians , formed a caravan this Saturday that left Tapachula with the intention of reaching the Mexico-United States border, tired of the fact that immigration authorities have not resolved their legal status after several months of processing the paperwork. "They practically have us kidnapped in Tapachula ," said one who did not provide his name.

The group of Haitians, joined by Central Americans, Cubans, and Venezuelans, left Tapachula's central park at 8 a.m. yesterday, headed west, and took the highway that connects Mexico and Guatemala.

The events come five days after protests and demonstrations in the border city, where President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will arrive this Sunday .

As they passed through the municipality of Huehuetán, the National Migration Institute agents closed the checkpoint and left, allowing the migrants to cross without any problems, some running and shouting with joy. "Yes, we can," some chanted.
