Puerto Peñasco, July 7.- Following protocol 059 for the protection of marine species, a stranded whale on the shore of Puerto Peñasco beach was rescued by dozens of citizens who were on the scene. Elements of the Navy, Civil Protection and Firefighters went to the scene to assist with the removal of the cetacean to the Sea of Cortez.
The incident occurred around 6:00 a.m. this Wednesday at El Mirador beach in the municipality of Puerto Peñasco in northern Sonora, when passing citizens noticed the five-ton species stranded after approaching the seashore in an attempt to hunt for food.
For about four hours, volunteers and rescuers activated the 059 protocol for the protection of marine species, which consists of taking steps to keep the whale hydrated and stress-free as the tide rose. There, about 100 volunteers began hauling seawater in buckets so the whale could breathe, while others placed wet towels and blankets around its body.
Likewise, rescuers removed nearly 10 tons of rock to form a channel, and after the tide completely covered the whale, some 70 men, including citizens and rescuers, pushed it back into the waters of the Sea of Cortez.
