The Angolan national basketball team was crowned the champion of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) AfroBasket 2025 after defeating Mali 70-43 in the final at Kilamba Arena in Luanda, Angola.
According to the FIBA website, as reported in Jakarta on Tuesday, the match result also confirmed Angola as the most successful country on the African continent, with a collection of 12 championship titles.
The squad was dominant throughout the tournament with a perfect record of six wins without a loss, ending their title drought that had lasted since 2013.
Public enthusiasm is also very big, with 12,700 tickets in the arena sold out in the last three matches involving Angola.
For Mali, this year's final marked a historic moment, as it was the first time they had finished second or runner-up in the FIBA AfroBasket.
Mali finished the competition with a record of four wins and three losses.
Meanwhile, Senegal secured third place after defeating Cameroon 98-72. This result marked Senegal's third consecutive third-place finish.
Angolan guard Childe Dundao was voted the tournament's most valuable player (MVP).
He was also named to the 2025 AfroBasket Team of the Year alongside teammate Bruno Fernando, Malian duo Mahamane Coulibaly and Aliou Diarra, and Senegalese Brancou Badio.
A number of individual awards were also given, including Team Fair Play for Madagascar, the most rebounds were awarded to Aliou Diarra, the best three-point shooter and the highest scorer was won by Brancou Badio.
In the final standings, Angola is at the top with a 6-0 record (win-loss), followed by Mali, Senegal, and Cameroon in the top four.
Other strong teams such as Nigeria, Egypt, Ivory Coast and Cape Verde occupy positions five to eight.
Angola's success this time not only confirms their dominance in the African basketball scene, but also marks a comeback after more than a decade of waiting for a new title.
The overwhelming public support in Luanda has been a key factor in the team's resurgence.
