BC must generate clean energy to no longer depend on US gas: expert

Tijuana, April 22.- Baja California is far from "energy sovereignty," as its electricity production depends on gas imported from the U.S., making it necessary to generate clean energy so the state can be self-sufficient, said Dr. Nivaldo Santos Cuba, coordinator of the Renewable Energy Engineering program at Cetys' Tijuana campus.

In the context of Earth Day, the Cetys professor noted that, in addition to reducing the ecological impact on the Earth, increasing the use of clean energy sources would allow Mexico to stabilize the prices of different energy sources and maintain control over the consumption of non-renewable sources and reduce dependence on a single type of energy.

This problem, he noted, is reflected in Baja California, whose electricity production depends on gas imported from the United States, as it is not connected to the national electricity grid, which accounts for 98.7 percent of the nation's electricity coverage. Therefore, it relies heavily on these imports and has little to do with clean energy.

"Although the state has private energy generating companies, most of them export their production to the United States."
