Second seed Coco Gauff advanced to the Cincinnati Open quarterfinals after defeating Lucia Bronzetti 6-2, 6-4 in 1 hour and 19 minutes to face Jasmine Paolini.
Gauff previously won by a WO over Dayana Yastremska in the third round, four days since her last competitive match, a two-set win over Wang Xinyu in the second round.
The 2023 champion looked exhausted as he reached the last eight of his first tournament since winning his second Grand Slam at Roland Garros.
"Most of the time I played aggressively," Gauff said in an on-court interview after the match, as quoted by the WTA on Friday WIB.
"He didn't let me play fast, so I just tried to play controlled but also aggressive," he said, again.
Gauff advanced to her fifth ATP 1000 quarter-final of 2025 from 10 tournaments, and her win-loss record improved to 2-0 against Bronzetti.
Next, she faces 7th seed Paolini, who defeated an ailing Barbora Krejcikova 6-1, 6-2 in 1 hour and 11 minutes.
In their first meeting since the 2024 Wimbledon final, Krejcikova received medical treatment on her left leg while trailing 0-3 in the second set, and the Czech's movement appeared hampered.
