Mexico City, June 28.- The recent retirement reform and the increase in the universal pension eliminate the risk of a social crisis in the future , as has happened in other countries, since they lay the groundwork for completely eradicating poverty among older adults in the short term, said Abraham Vela Dib, president of the National Commission for the Retirement Savings System (Consar).
In an interview with La Jornada on the occasion of the 24th anniversary of the creation of the Retirement Savings System (SAR) on July 1, the official considered that the reform that went into effect this year, which increased mandatory savings (by employers) and reduced the number of contribution weeks , is the most significant of the current administration.
In addition, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador proposed gradually increasing the universal pension until it doubles by early 2024. The plan will begin in July of this year with a 15 percent increase. In January 2022, 2023, and 2024, the increase will be 20 percent annually, plus inflation, up to 6,000 pesos bimonthly.
"These reforms are a great legacy for citizens, especially for young people and future generations. A pending debt to the Mexican people was addressed, related to an important issue of social justice," Vela Dib emphasized.
