Santiago, October 7.- The forest fires that occurred this week caused irreparable damage to the moai, the thousand-year-old monolithic statues on Chile's Easter Island in Polynesia , lamented Rapa Nui Mayor Pedro Edmunds Paoa on Thursday.
"It's incalculable damage, because the cracking of an original and emblematic stone cannot be recovered , no matter how many millions of euros or dollars they put into it," Edmunds Paoa told Radio Bío Bío.
The mayor explained that a group of archaeologists from the island is leading the investigations .
Easter Island, or Rapa Nui, is known worldwide for its giant monolithic sculptures called moai and for being one of the most isolated inhabited places in the world.
