DIF closes its preschools, leaving teachers without jobs and children without education.

 

Tijuana, August 14.- Today, the DIF ordered the closure of all preschools, dozens of teachers reported, suddenly finding themselves jobless and unable to provide access to education for hundreds of children in Tijuana, just two weeks before the start of the 2025-2026 school year.

A community guidance teacher from the municipal DIF preschools told La Jornada Baja California that several guidance teachers were invited to a meeting with the DIF director, Paola Nohemí Leyva. Parents were also invited to another meeting.

At the guidance counselors' meeting, they were informed about the closure of the preschools, as "they did not comply with the (Civil Protection) guidelines required for their presence, where children were at risk," the teacher said.

Regarding the parents' meeting, the Ministry of Education informed them that they would be able to transfer their children to government schools, some close to their homes, others not so close. They also gave them vouchers for school supplies and promised them vouchers for uniforms.

However, the counselors were not assigned any relocation plans, nor were they provided with any documents or letters of recommendation to support their work experience. Approximately 30 teachers, some with up to 30 years of experience there and certified by the national DIF (National Institute of Family and Family Development), are now unemployed.
