Egypt's president insists he will not give up Nile water rights

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi rejected any unilateral action regarding the Nile River and warned that anyone who thinks Egypt will ignore its water rights "is mistaken."

In a joint press conference in Cairo on Tuesday (August 12) with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, Sisi explained that the combined annual flow of the White Nile and the Blue Nile, which are tributaries of the Nile, reaches about 1,600 billion cubic meters.

Most of the flow is lost through forests, swamps, evaporation, and groundwater.

“Only a small portion reaches the Nile River, and Egypt and Sudan receive about 85 billion cubic meters — only about 4 percent of the total,” Sisi said.
