Electoral reform postponed until after the recall referendum

Mexico City, September 25.- The sweeping electoral reform that Morena intended to test immediately after last June's elections will not be introduced this year, but rather after March 2022, following the referendum on the recall process.

The coordinator of the Morena senators , Ricardo Monreal , confirmed that the constitutional reform aimed at ensuring that electoral bodies act impartially, submit to the principle of legality, in addition to reducing the cost of elections, will remain pending because the mechanism that will allow citizens to decide whether the mandate of the federal Executive continues is already in process .

"The Mandate Revocation Law is practically in effect, and making changes now to the National Electoral Institute ( INE ) or the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judicial Branch would be very difficult," he stressed.

Senator Monreal said that there are no initiatives or prior work and the electoral reform project that he developed in recent months, which proposes the redesign of the INE and the TEPJF , with the reduction from 11 to seven councilors and from seven to five magistrates , is only a draft, which he is not sure he will present and perhaps he will do so, when President López Obrador presents his own reform,
