Tijuana, August 27. Evelin García, the 18-year-old girl who was fighting for her life at Tijuana General Hospital (HGT) after contracting rickettsia from a tick bite , died this Wednesday morning.
According to her family, Evelin suffered cardiac arrest around 9:00 a.m., after several days in critical condition.
Her father, Saúl García Lugo, firmly stated that his daughter's death could have been avoided if a proper diagnosis had been made from the outset.
He alleged that primary care medical personnel failed to correctly identify the disease, resulting in a delay in starting treatment. The teenager was diagnosed with a throat infection at Tecate General Hospital. When her condition began to deteriorate, she was referred to the East Zone General Hospital, where she could not be treated due to a lack of specialists and insufficient personnel to take vital signs.
She was eventually admitted to the HGT, where she remained for over a week, reaching her final birthday, her 18th birthday. Mr. García acknowledged that the treatment was good, but nothing could be done for his daughter .
“ It all started with a misdiagnosis , and look how bad it got: my daughter has already lost her life, there's nothing we can do,” he lamented.
He made an urgent call to citizens to take extreme precautions with domestic and stray animals, as they can carry ticks, vectors of this dangerous disease.
