German lawmaker calls for sanctions on Israel and suspension of arms exports

The call by Siemie Mahler, deputy leader of the Social Democratic Party's parliamentary group, reflects a hardening of Berlin's anti-Israel rhetoric, which has so far not resulted in any major policy changes.

Mahler, whose party joined a coalition with the conservative Meretz party this year, wrote to party lawmakers after returning from a trip to Israel with Foreign Minister Johan Wadephul last week.

"I believe the Israeli government will not move much without pressure," she said in the letter, which Reuters reviewed. "If there are no tangible improvements soon, there will be consequences."

She added that recognition of a Palestinian state should not be a "taboo" issue, noting that Israeli statements that there are no restrictions on aid to Gaza are not convincing.

At the same time, Mahler called for the immediate and unconditional release of the hostages held by the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).

She said that Hamas should have no role in the political future of Gaza.

"It must be disarmed, and its reign of terror must end," she said.

Western countries have intensified their efforts to pressure Israel, with Britain, Canada, and France expressing their willingness to recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly next September.

Israel criticized France, Britain, and Canada, saying their actions were in the interests of Hamas.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel, with American support, has been waging a war of genocide in Gaza, including killing, starvation, destruction, and forced displacement, ignoring all international calls and orders from the International Court of Justice to halt it.

The genocide in Gaza left more than 210,000 Palestinians dead or wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 9,000 missing, in addition to hundreds of thousands of displaced people, and a famine that claimed the lives of many.
