Google will end support for its Steam game distribution platform for Chromebook Beta in early 2026.
According to a 9to5Google report on August 7, 2025, cited Monday, the installation process still runs when users enter the word "Steam" into the ChromeOS Launcher, but is accompanied by a message that the Steam Beta Program for Chromebooks will end on January 1, 2026.
"After that date, games installed through Beta will no longer be playable on your device. We appreciate your participation in this program, which helps us learn more about the future of gaming on Chromebooks," the message continued.
Steam for Chromebook first arrived in alpha in March 2022, then updated to beta in November 2022.
This support, which was first introduced in 2022, was initially part of Google's efforts to build a gaming ecosystem on ChromeOS.
