Granit Xhaka appointed Sunderland captain

New Sunderland player Granit Xhaka has been appointed as the team's captain for the 2025/2026 season.

"Being captain of this club and this team makes me incredibly proud. I hope to demonstrate my leadership skills on and off the pitch, helping my teammates both in training and across the club," Xhaka was quoted as saying on Sunderland's official website on Thursday.

"To be part of Sunderland's history, alongside some of the names who have worn the captain's armband before, is an honor. Those who know me know exactly what to expect; I'm a demanding person. I'm a winner and I want to win, and I expect the same from my teammates," he said.

Xhaka also wore the captain's armband on several occasions while playing for Bayer Leverkusen. He has also been captain of the Swiss national team since 2020.

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris has welcomed Xhaka's appointment as captain.

"In the Premier League, consistency, maturity, and experience are crucial. Granit brings all these qualities. His attitude so far has been impressive, and on the pitch you can see his high level of play. The other players around him can feel this influence, and his leadership will support the team as we adapt to a different environment and face new challenges and opportunities," said Le Bris.

Sunderland returned to the top flight of English football this season after an eight-year absence. The Black Cats secured promotion from the Championship via the playoffs after a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United in the playoff final.
