Human Rights Watch: Israel targeted hundreds of schools in Gaza and killed displaced people with US munitions.

The international human rights organization noted in a statement that the attacks included "indiscriminate and unlawful" strikes carried out with US munitions, destroying or severely damaging nearly all of Gaza's schools. The organization emphasized that these attacks "reflect the absence of any safe haven for civilians and the deepening humanitarian crisis in the Strip."

Human Rights Watch called on governments supporting Israel, including the United States, to suspend all arms transfers to the country and "take urgent measures to enforce the Genocide Convention," warning of further mass atrocities.

The organization noted that it investigated two Israeli airstrikes targeting the Khadija Girls' School in Deir al-Balah and the Zaytoun C School east of Gaza City, which resulted in the deaths of at least 49 Palestinians. It confirmed that "no military target was found" at either site, making the attacks "indiscriminate and unlawful."

She added that Israel did not provide any explanation or information regarding these strikes, and did not respond to an official letter sent by the organization last July, including the results of the investigation and requesting clarifications.

"Israeli airstrikes on schools sheltering displaced people are just one example of the bloodshed in Gaza," said Gerry Simpson, Amnesty International's associate director for crisis, conflict, and arms control. "Governments must not tolerate this horrific killing of civilians seeking safety."

Human Rights Watch warned that the destruction of schools would disrupt education for years and require massive reconstruction resources, with far-reaching consequences for children, teachers, and families.

After Israel destroyed 88% of the Gaza Strip's infrastructure, including homes, most displaced Palestinians have no place to live except for schools and some university buildings.

With American support, Israel has been committing genocide in Gaza since October 7, 2023, leaving 61,258 Palestinians dead, 152,045 injured, and more than 9,000 missing. Hundreds of thousands have been displaced, and a famine has claimed the lives of many, including dozens of children.
