Tijuana, September 8.- At least four homes were flooded, water levels were downed, power lines were downed, and streams were swollen after the intense rains caused by Hurricane Kay on Cedros Island, the first to hit the population. Hurricane Kay reached the island as a Category 1 storm just after noon on Thursday.
From the early hours, a red alert was declared, meaning "maximum danger," and a yellow alert was declared for Ensenada (high danger). The rest of the state is under a blue alert and a "hurricane warning zone" up to the U.S. border.
The director of Municipal Civil Protection of Ensenada, Julio Obregón, reported that as a precaution, Exportadora de Sal, SA de CV, which provides electricity to the area, shut down its plant, leaving the town - located about 425 kilometers south of Ensenada, on the 28th Parallel - without the ability to communicate or receive communications during the storm caused by Kay.
By telephone, the official reported that the forecasts came true on Thursday afternoon, and the meteorological phenomenon brought rain and wind to Cedros Island, which has 3,000 inhabitants (according to the 2020 census) and is primarily employed in fishing and salt exports. Access to the island is only possible by air or sea.
