In his memoirs, Sarkozy says that Calderón was controlled by García Luna

Mexico City, January 4. Nicolas Sarkozy, former president of France, revealed in his memoirs, *The Years of Struggle*, published in Spanish in November, that former Secretary of Public Security Genaro García Luna was the decision-maker during the six-year term of former President Felipe Calderón (2006-12), highlighting his firm and categorical refusal to address the case of Florence Cassez during his visit to Mexico in March 2009.

In the chapter on Mexico, Sarkozy notes that before visiting the country he spoke with Mexican authorities about the case and the possibility of obtaining extradition to France , so his visit seemed promising.

But back in Mexico, a sudden change in Calderón's stance, coupled with his refusal to debate the legal commission established in the case, led him to suspect that something more serious was happening behind the scenes in Mexican political life , referring to the role of García Luna.

The power relationship between the two men was reversed . It was the minister who imposed his will on the president, not the other way around, the former president points out. He adds that, due to his disappointment with the wall of incomprehension and injustice on the part of the Mexican authorities, he decided to abandon diplomatic dialogue
