Given the possibility that Morena and its allies will obtain a supermajority in the Union Congress—a requirement for the approval of constitutional reforms —President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced this Monday that he will agree with the virtual president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, on how to execute the so-called "Plan C" and what initiatives they will promote.
"I'm going to talk to Claudia, the virtual president-elect, because we're presenting initiatives that are in Congress, to see which of those initiatives we can push forward and get approved ," the president said at his daily press conference at the National Palace.
He noted that since the new legislature begins on September 1, his government will have one month to submit initiatives before his term ends and Sheinbaum takes office on October 1.
"The future or virtual president-elect and then constitutional president, because I believe the next term begins on September 1st and I finish at the end of September, that's a month, so we have to come to an agreement to look at those initiatives with Claudia and other things we have to look at jointly," said the president.
After emphasizing that he is not seeking to impose anything, he insisted that he thinks one of the reforms that should be addressed is the one related to the Judiciary .
"I do think that the issue of judicial reform must be addressed, because it is not possible to maintain a judicial branch that is not at the service of the people, of society, that is at the service, as is public knowledge, of a minority and sometimes of criminals, at the service of organized and white-collar crime ," he asserted.
"There must be a judiciary that represents the Mexican people, incorruptible, because otherwise we won't move forward. But we need to discuss this with the president-elect, and see what the legislators' opinions are on the case," he added.
