The Iranian national team has reportedly withdrawn from the 2026 World Cup in response to the United States airstrike on Iran last week.
Quoted from OneFootball, Wednesday, Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Doyanmali conveyed the news and there were several things that became the basis for this decision.
"Given that the corrupt US regime has assassinated our leader, we cannot under any circumstances participate in the World Cup," Doyanmali said.
Apart from the impact of the killing of Iran's supreme leader Ayatolla Ali Khamenei, Doyanmali also explained that the decision to resign also took into account the safety of the team.
In fact, Iran is in Group G of the 2026 World Cup with the Belgian national team, the Egyptian national team, and the New Zealand national team, all of whose matches will be held in the United States.
