It is urgent to guarantee a comprehensive response to the families of missing persons: Red Cross

Tijuana, August 29.- In Mexico and Central America, the disappearance of persons continues to be "one of the most devastating humanitarian consequences," requiring state governments to assume their responsibility to prevent and resolve this problem and guarantee a comprehensive response to the families of the victims, stated the Regional Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for Mexico and Central America.

In this regard, the Office in Mexico of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN-DH) urged Mexican authorities to consolidate a victim-centered judicial policy, in line with international standards, and taking into account the recommendations issued by international human rights mechanisms.

This includes eliminating procedural obstacles that hinder access to justice, expanding the scope of the "amparo buscados" (seeking protection), and strengthening judicial oversight of investigations and arrests, he stressed.

In a message on the occasion of the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, which is commemorated tomorrow, Saturday, the UN Human Rights Commission highlighted the role played by judicial authorities in "ensuring the availability of effective remedies, due process, and fair trials that allow for the punishment of those responsible, as well as reparations for the victims and their families."
