Lozano to remain at the helm of El Tricolor when his interim term ends after the 2023 Gold Cup, but the manager knows the decision will be made by the board. Although his intention is to remain at the helm as long as possible, the young coach has raised the possibility of becoming an assistant if the future coach of El Tri calls him.
“I appreciate the players. You try to put yourself in their shoes. When I played, I liked the coach to keep things as simple as possible and give us the tools to win. I try to do that and develop their characteristics. The rest are decisions that don't fall to me or the players. The important thing is to do the best job possible,” Lozano said in a press conference from Phoenix.
Even as he tries to maintain a low-key interest in signing a longer contract as national team coach, Lozano hasn't ruled out the possibility of becoming an assistant coach if someone else is chosen.
"If you join a coaching staff, it must be because the coach asked you. My ego is small; I can be an assistant to anyone if they think I can help them and I can learn. If the new coach feels that way, I'd think about it. It's not a yes, but I would think about it," he stated in a sincere gesture.
Now, looking ahead to the match against Haiti on Matchday 2 of the Gold Cup, Jimmy also doesn't want to be boastful, stating that "it's been a while since there have been easy matches in CONCACAF," although he made it clear that he wants "a winning mentality" from El Tri.
