New York, March 15.- United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned yesterday that Russia's invasion of Ukraine has a "chilling" possibility of escalating into a nuclear war.
"The prospect of a nuclear conflict, once unthinkable, is now back within the realm of possibility," Antonio Guterres told international media, urging a renewed commitment to peace and diplomacy.
The UN Secretary-General appeared before the press yesterday at the organization's New York headquarters, where he called for maintaining security at nuclear facilities, noting, "Raising the alert level of Russia's nuclear forces is a chilling development," following a fire at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine during the Russian takeover of the facility.
It is worth noting that Russian President Vladimir Putin warned late last month that Russian nuclear forces should be on high alert, statements that sparked fears that the invasion of Ukraine could lead to a nuclear war, as Russia and the United States are the two countries with the largest arsenals of nuclear warheads after the Cold War.
