Mexico joins countries suspending postal shipments to the US

Tijuana, August 28.- Correos de México has temporarily suspended shipments to the United States because, starting August 29, the Mexican government will charge taxes on all packages received from anywhere in the world, regardless of the value of the goods.

The imposition of tariffs on all packages, which the Donald Trump administration initially targeted against Asian trade, has been relegated to a blanket regulation that overrides the provisions of the USMCA (the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement).

Even the United States' main trading partners are not exempt from paying taxes on packages valued at less than $800, the so-called de minimis tariffs, although they still have a certain "competitive advantage" associated with the USMCA, explained Gloria Rocío Estrada Antón, president of the Technical Commission on Foreign Trade of the Mexican College of Public Accountants (CCPM).

In a joint statement, the Mexican Postal Service (Sepomex) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) reported that shipments to the United States were suspended yesterday and the measure will be temporary "while operational processes are defined."
