Mexico City. Dámaso López Serrano , known as "Mini Lic." He is accused of masterminding the murder of journalist Javier Valdez , a correspondent for the newspaper La Jornada , in May 2017. He was released by a federal court in Southern California.

According to information from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons website, López Serrano, inmate number 63436-298, was released on Friday.

According to the American news site Vice News, that same day, San Diego District Judge Dana Sabraw stated that López Serrano "has made great strides in addressing the harm he committed as a member of the Sinaloa Cartel (…) his actions have matched his words, and we believe in his sincerity. This defendant has done tremendous work to address the harm he has caused."

López Serrano was sentenced to six years in prison for drug trafficking- related offenses after appearing in the United States, but will be able to serve his sentence in freedom.

Mini Lic has an immigration detention order in the United States, so it remains to be decided whether he will remain in the country or be deported to Mexico.
