Inflation in Mexico, which is currently at its highest level in more than two decades (8.70 percent), would reach 12 percent if not for the government fuel subsidy, according to the Ministry of Finance. In other words, regular gasoline would cost around 30 pesos, instead of 21 pesos and a fraction thereof. The good news is that the subsidy for regular, premium, and diesel gasoline will continue and will not compromise the health of public finances, stated Rogelio Ramírez de la O, Secretary of Finance, in his appearance before the Chamber of Deputies. “Public finances will remain healthy, despite the fuel subsidies that the Mexican government decided to grant to protect the purchasing power of Mexican families,” he stated.
Despite the subsidy, which has been supplemented since March, public revenues, both oil and non-oil, are above the targets established in the 2022 economic package. The fuel subsidy has been criticized because it primarily benefits the wealthy, who are those who own cars. Public transportation users also benefit, even if they don't drive Mercedes-Benz cars.
Marriage
Despite the fact that getting married is becoming more expensive every day, Mexicans remain faithful to tradition. In 2021, 453,085 civil weddings were recorded. This figure represents a 35 percent increase compared to 2020. Interesting data provided by INEGI:
• Nationally, the marriage rate per thousand inhabitants aged 18 and over was 5.11. This represents an increase of 1.29 compared to 2020. The highest rate was recorded in Quintana Roo, with 8.01. The lowest was in Mexico City, with 2.80.
