Two deaths were reported in Mumbai as torrential rains of 500mm over 84 hours disrupted normal life, prompting the India Meteorological Department to issue the season’s first red alert for August 18-19. One person died in a compound wall collapse at Napean Sea Road, while another was electrocuted in Kanjurmarg. In response, BMC and civic bodies of Navi Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Mira Bhayander declared holidays for all schools and colleges.
