Mexico City, November 4. Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard yesterday criticized the United States for not making an effort to curb illegal arms trafficking to Mexico, comparable to that made by the Mexican government to control the introduction of fentanyl and chemical precursors into U.S. territory.
He asserted that our country is suffering from "a gun pandemic of varying degrees of intensity" and that over the past three years, the country has detected and seized weapons illegally brought in from the United States in every state.
Ebrard participated in the international conference "The Business of Lethality: Arms Trafficking to Mexico," organized by El Colegio de México.
From January 1, 2020, to September 22, the federal government seized 55,996 weapons illegally imported from the United States. During the same period, the U.S. government seized only 355 pieces of weapons that traffickers intended to smuggle across the border.
