Remembering IGK Manila, a fighter in various fields

On August 18, 2025, the world of sports and Indonesian society lost one of its most important figures. Major General (Ret.) I Gusti Kompyang (IGK) Manila, active in various fields, passed away at the age of 83.

Born in Singaraja, Bali, on July 8, 1942, IGK Manila began his life in the military. He was one of the first 15 young officers to graduate from the National Military Academy (AMN), which specialize in the Military Police. His military career progressed to the rank of Major General in the Indonesian Army (POM ABRI).

He is also active in various organizations. Manila served as Deputy Chairman of ORARI and Director of the Indonesian Sports Academy (AKORIN), and is known by his amateur radio nickname, YB0AA.

But perhaps the most striking role of the loyal man with the thick mustache to the Indonesian sports public was when he was the manager of the Indonesian national team at the 1991 SEA Games. Manila successfully led the Indonesian national team to win the SEA Games gold medal. This achievement lasted for quite some time before the Red and White team finally won the SEA Games gold medal again in 2023.

At the club level, Manila also has a strong track record. He was once tasked by the Chairman of the West Java KONI, Suryatna Subrata, to manage the Bandung Raya club. There, Manila also performed impressively, leading the club to the Indonesian League title in 1996.
