Representative Alejandrina Corral Quintero proposes eliminating reelection

Mexicali, August 26. With the goal of eliminating consecutive elections , local legislator Alejandrina Corral Quintero presented an initiative proposing that Congress reform several articles of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States.

In his explanatory statement, he emphasized that the main arguments supporting the 2014 political-electoral reform to allow reelection were that it would help popular representatives achieve greater professionalization, generate specialization in the performance of their duties, and promote greater accountability .

"However, even accepting the spirit of immediate reelection, which seeks greater quality in the democratization process, we cannot fail to point out the results achieved to date, as they have only led to the perpetuation of individuals and political parties in office , acts of corruption, inequity in the electoral process, and, above all, have distorted the constitutional principles of public service," he stated.

The legislative proposal establishes that federal senators and deputies, municipal presidents, council members, and municipal trustees, as well as representatives to state legislatures, cannot be reelected for the immediate term, in order to reestablish the revolutionary principles of "Effective Suffrage, No Reelection "
